Sleep is Good!

Why is Sleep important? When you sleep, your body and brain has a chance to repair itself. While you’re sleeping:

  • You get stronger as your muscles build themselves back up after play and exercise
  • You get smarter as your brain goes over all it learnt during the day
  • You wake up with more energy to play, learn and be happy.

Sportsmanship – Being Honest

Our new Life Skill focus for September is on Sportsmanship and this week we’ll be talking about being honest.

In workouts, when everyone seems to be going really fast, it’s important that we don’t cheat by skipping a few reps just so we can move on to the next exercise and ‘keep up’ with everyone else. On some exercises, you’re going to be fast, others you’ll be a bit slower. If your coach wants you to squat all the way down, make sure every single time you squat you squat all the way down.

This makes you better as you progress. While it may feel good to get away with a fast time today, sooner or later you won’t get any better if you don’t take your time and make sure you do the exercises right.

Oh, and make sure you write your correct time on the board!

Exercise and Attention

This article by the New York Times gives some insight into how PE can help children focus. In CrossFit Kids HQ in the states, the teen classes have 20 minutes study time on their worst subject at the end of each class to help them improve.

In John Ratey’s book – Spark! The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise & The Brain – he describes how the Naperville Central High School became one of the top schools in its district after implementing new PE procedures. I have a copy of the book at CFKI if anyone wants it.
