  1. I felt physically ill reading that Lipitor article.

    Thanks for sharing it.

  2. I feel so proud to work for Pfizer today…Not… I hadnt heard of this patent extension, but I do know it is happening with 70% of blockbuster drugs, ie drugs with an annual profit turnover of 2.5billion US Dollars right accross the pharma and biotech companies…. Money talks…

  3. If anyone needs a lift to Shanganagh tomorrow I’ll be at the Institute at 9.30 before we head down for the run.

  4. Big article on the BBC website today about how red meat is bad for your weight. Then goes on to say you’ll put on about 5kg over 5 years! Ha! The dribbly rubbish they print!

  5. I’m right with you there Simon. I believe that a good percentage of these cases could definitely be solved with a proper diet and exercise, then again it’s the quick fix society, easier to take a pill (even with horrible side effects) than educate yourself on proper nutrition and exercise.

To defend Pfizer slightly, I don’t think the entirety of the blame can solely rest at their feet, they’re a business supplying a product that there is a demand for, sure their marketing ethics probably aren’t the best but they’re still a business. The doctors should be educating themselves on the choices they’re making for their patients but the patients themselves should also be doing the background research in order to better understand their condition, we’re talking about first world countries here, internet access is freely available and all the information you could ever need is out there.

  6. It’s a bit crap that we’ve advanced to the point where you may be better off researching things yourself and then telling your paid consultant how he should or shouldn’t be doing his job.

  7. Just on the educating patients POV. I spoke to a couple of my consultants about this and asked them did they think that putting patients on a strict diet and exercise regime was a good plan.

All of them said it was the ideal scenario and what they want to achieve. They all also said that in 99/100 cases that it simply won’t work as the person is either lazy, unmotivated or simply doesn’t care enough. The doctor is fully aware that lipitor is not a quick fix, what they are aware of is that it’s the best they can do for a patient that won’t help themselves.

  8. Plus lets not forget the role of government to do whats best for citizens, providing education and direction. Sorely lacking in terms of health…
