  1. Just wondering what the story is with cheat meals for the nutrition challenge? Were any rules laid out on this at the start???

  2. Orla,

The only rules for participation are accountability, private photos, and “Angie”. We want everyone to record everything – the good, the bad and the ugly.

  3. Think the Tabata Front Squats were fine for me the last time??? Got a date with Angie tonight though and i’m not looking forward to it!!

  4. Funny link, sent to me today. (wfs ish) if you dont like mice don’t bother looking at this

  5. In response to the article on recovery, during my long distance running days a few years ago my ‘rest days’ consisted of easy 6-10 mile runs, more often 10 miles than 10k. These usually took 68-70 mins. My training parter was a former international runner who had built up resistance to this volume of training over 20 years. I had been running 2 years by the time i built up this kind of milage. I ended up severly overtrained on numerous occasions and eventually packed up running competively as the harder i trained the slower i got.
Looking back now i can easily see the folly of my ways, too many miles, not enough rest and terrible nutrition.
Rest days for me now means exactly that, i do no training whatsover, in my opinion if you do even a little bit of training its not a rest day. I dont believe there is such thing as active rest.
You either trained today or you didnt. There is no grey area.

  7. I think active rest is completely underutilized. I use active rest all the time. I think it is highly individualized where active rest for one person is different than for another person and I also think it depends what your goals are. I think it depends a lot on genetics, fitness and nutrition just as much as any other workout day. I have been a long distance athlete. I ran cross country in high school and competed at long distance triathlons. There is definitely something to be said for getting out and getting fresh blood flow to the muscles. This is a very important part of the healing process and for me greatly reduces muscle stiffness. I do agree that when utilized incorrectly active rest can be detrimental to your overall training and that sometimes you just need a couple days break but I think to completely discount as an effective method for decreasing recovery time and always a workout is incorrect. An active recovery day for me may be a workout for someone else and vice versa. This is something I feel passionately about and consistently utilize (especially when hungover) but then again I may just be a freak with different ideas about fun and fitness than the average person. To your point- I believe in the grey area being very valuable and actually used today as an active “rest day.”

  8. I want to clarify one run-on sentence:
“I do agree that when utilized incorrectly active rest can be detrimental to your overall training. Sometimes you just need a couple days break but I think to completely discount as an effective method for decreasing recovery time and always considering it a workout is an incorrect approach to active rest.”

I was getting to the point that I have been at the endurance level where a 6 mile run or 40 mile bike ride was easy and quite enjoyable in order to give myself some credibility to speak to this on level playing field. I would be happy to have an actual conversation about it anytime.
