  1. And there was I thinkin Colm forgot about me and the pushups…..

looking to know about the core excercises that will help me develop a bit more….is there a group of excercises I could be looing at that I could do as my individual training?

Also anybody who has the Adidas lifting shoes take a size 11/ eu 46? would like to try before I buy.

  2. John – I am usually a size 11, but have a size 10.5 Oly shoe. They are a snug fit on me, but not too tight. You are welcome to try them on. I will be down tomorrow at 5pm.

  3. Oh! Nice workout. I did this on my own one Thursday some time back (doh ! obviously June 11th :-) ) and I really liked it. One exercise doesn’t tire you out really for the other one ;-)

  4. John,

When are you next down and we’ll have a chat about it. Much easier to decide what you should be doing once we have your goals nailed down.

    Eamonn,
5 capsules a day should be plenty.

  5. I thought that article on cardio was a load of crap. It was total broscience with so many holes in it.

Best 10km time in the world, but unable to get thru an Akido grading…? Yeah right. C’mon like.

Wheezing after 50 yards in the pool… what a surprise. If you’ve bad/inefficient technique in the water you’re dead. I bet once he worked on his technique he got a lot better very quickly. I can also guarantee you that if someone with a low level of underlying fitness did the same (ie lots of technique work) they wouldn’t be near as a good a swimmer.

And a sub 3 hour marathon’s not any good now?? It’s especially not good because he “trained for a few months”?? FFS like!!!! I’d like to see anyone else who doesn’t run marathons train for a few months and do a sub 3! And no consideration was given to the point of the season it was in…. ie the tail end. After he murdered himself for weeks on end during and in preparation for one of the most exhausting physical tests in the world he’s still expected to run an ultra quick marathon??

Specific adaptation to imposed demands… .duh!! Of course that’s what’s going to happen. But anyone with a good base level of fitness will find the transfer and adaptability between different sports/demands MUCH easier. It’s ridiculous to try to imply that being a fit cyclist/runner isn’t going to make swimming easier.

The best example I can give of this is myself… I went from a 12.02 Fran to 4.12 in less than 6 months. That happened because I had the strength, but not the lungs. Am I supposed to believe that my base level of strength isn’t the reason my times came down so quickly?? Like if you took a weak untrained person and gave them 6 months of CF training, would their time come down so much?? I don’t think so!!

    Grrr… I hate agenda pushing!

  6. I think the cardio article might have gone wee bit overboard to make a point. Did he expect Lance to win the marathon? Also “cardio” appears to be a catch-all term for any sort of long distance stuff, so within that could be plodding on a treadmill watching tv for 90 mins or a 35min 10k, you could cover the same distance but it’s a different workout and the effect on your akido grading would be very different!

Also, if you took into account the time and effort required to get a 35min 10k, would you be better off using the time and effort to get better at akido? How many years training would it take to get to that level and how would your akido progress if you focused primarily on that and did a little conditioning to complement it over the same time period?

It’s hard to know where the guy is coming from without being in his head. You have a point regarding the swimming though, James, he used a sh!tty example in that case, I forget who said this but “running is a sport, swimming is an art”. It might just be an extreme example to illustrate that in order to win in a certain endurance sport you need a high vo2max but a high vo2max does not mean you can win in a sport (it can’t hurt though)

  7. James,

    Nice retort.

I agree with you. I suppose what I liked is the idea that one type of training, labelled ‘cardio’ is good for everything where your heart rate goes up or you get out of breath.

I’ve seen and heard of it so many times in MMA, where guys get ready for fights/comps by doing lots of running instead of training more akin to the demands of their sport.

But he definitely gets hyperbolic in trying to prove his point. I like when links provoke responses, maybe I should post politic commentary too? :P

  8. Colm and Ed,

I agree with your point about “cardio” as a catch all term being a poor word to use.

My biggest gripe is that he wasn’t just taking weekend warriors as example. Like to say the guy with the absolute best 10km time ever couldn’t survive a grading’s ridiculous. I know the actual work is totally different, but for someone of such a high level of fitness, I can’t help but think they’d be ok!!

And have you ever used Fight Gone Bad as training for fighters Colm? It was originally designed to mimic a MMA fight right?

  9. By the way how is the hugening going lads has there been a weigh in?You over the 12stone mark now Eamonn?

  10. Damn, Colm will give me his disapproving ‘I am both disappointed and angry’ look again.

Paddy, I was 12 stone on the button last week. I slipped up over the weekend by getting hammered drunk and not eating the following day. I was slightly under 12 stone at weigh-in yesterday.

Planning to rectify it by being absolutely massive at next weeks weighin :P

  11. You’ll get shiny hair! I’m still awaiting the awesome effects it’s supposed to have on performance.
