Marianne and Lisa were talking last night about what you say when your friends question your eating habits if you’re out for a meal. What are your strategies? Do you find it difficult to stay Paleo/Zone when out with friends? Do you bother?

Colm ever get gear from roguefitness?
The only people I have found questioning my eating habits of late are my folks. I tried to explain to them the basics of the zone and the whole point of it and most importantly why I am doing it. I think some of it stuck with my dad but come dinner time my mother was still lashing the spuds onto the plate, there must have been around 6/7 of them on there which I would have had no problem eating before.
On a brighter note I’m pretty sore after that wordout last night. Ouch!
I see no results up from last night to prove I did a 35kg OHS!! (Ahem..gym standards slipping..)
Yeah I must say mon-fri zone has been fine but I really did find a dinner out with the girls on Sat hard. ‘Why aren’t you having a starter/dessert etc.’ I think girls just get jealous when they think you’re being good and they’re not. Although I got through it and had a steak and ordered a portion of green veg with it (brocolli, runner beans, mangetout etc) and had a black coffee with a bit of milk while other people where having banoffee…not bitter I swear!
Totally agree Lisa I think girls in my experience are more concerned about what their friends/ colleagues eat than guys. Dieting can be a competitive sport for girls and if someone else seems to be winning/being good it makes people jealous and they start to give you grief. Just quietly continuing and ignoring helps I think. Also reading up on stuff helps as most people haven’t a clue about nutrition (including doctors which I find quite scary) and can’t disagree really other than vaguely muttering didn’t Dr. Atkins die from a heart attack so low carb diets must be bad.
Irish Mothers are just like Mrs Doyle Pat when it comes to grub.Go on, Go on, Go on, Go on, Go on!
Yep ! Mentioned in passsing in the gym last week, that work can be one of the worst places to try and not eat ‘rubbish’. There is always some sort of biscuit hanging around near me and it took my colleagues a long while not to comment on me not eating biscuits with them. You just have to keep saying ‘no thank you’ and you will suddenly find that when people are taking biscuits etc they start making excuses cos they are emabarrassed cos they can’t say no
Remember if you give in, you are making other people feel better that they are eating rubbish, not yourself
ps Only found out quite recently that Dr Atkins slipped and hit his head and that how he died. So we can throw that back at them too
Just wondering what is the official Crossfit policy regarding warm downs? – should they be done? if so, is it similar to the warm up?
Is there anything one can do post WOD to reduce the likelihood of feeling stiff and sore the next day?
My family have come to accept it at this stage, I think the fact that I’m in a demonstratably better mood when I eat right convinced them. As my friends don’t see me as often they do find it odd but again I’m usually the fittest guy out of the group so they tend not to bug me too much about it. I can also explain a lot of the reasoning behind a low-carb diet which usually helps.
My landlady (I live in digs) is the worst though. I was never a huge potato eater and this troubled her from the start, eventually I got around it by saying that I had no problem with potatoes but I feel better if I don’t eat them. 2 years later and I’ve managed to convince her to just let me eat steamed vegetables with an extra portion of meat.
On the doctors and nutrition thing Eve, you’ll be delighted to hear that only one module is offered on nutrition on the UCD Graduate Medical course and it’s purely optional.
Lisa – big props for going out for dinner and sticking to the diet, a lesser person would’ve crumbled and just told themselves Ah sure I’ll just have a dessert, so – very proud of you, good stuff. When people ask why I’m on a diet I usually say I’m not and that I just eat healthily, that I feel better, sleep better and perform better but as always you will get the odd person who will just be rude about that fact that you aren’t eating the exact same way they are and why you’re wrong, at that point I usually like to get into a nice animated discussion about it!
And as for the ol banoffee pie well you just have to remember that banoffee pie will still exist when your cheat day rolls around, I think this healthy eating regime has thought me that above all else, a treat is just that, a treat. When you find yourself treating yourself three or four times a day you have to start to question what you did to deserve all these treats, doing 10, 20, 50, 100 or however many days of Paleo I think deserves a treat and it will taste all the better for the fact that you’ve earned it!
So keep up the good work and congrads on the OHS, that’s awesome!
Don’t really give a balls what anyone thinks about what I’m eatin’ when out, I’ll usually get steak and some veg or the like. If I’m being fed I’ll eat what’s put in front of me. It ain’t going to kill me, it probably happens every two weeks so I won’t get fat/sick/old and I’m not going to make demands if someone’s cooking for me. The all-out 100% approach worked well to get onto the wagon but I’m a lot happier at about 90%.
+ on the 35kg OHS, that’s solid work.
I used to know a girl who watched her diet carefully, and her work colleagues would actually leave ‘presents’ of chocolate bars and biscuits on her desk.
Pat-
I just got an RPG system from Rogue fitness (the pull-up bar and rings package, not the rocket propelled grenade, in case anyone is wondering). Great company, great equipment … But they screw you on the transatlantic shipping, they only offer an expensive option via USPS. The RPG system was about one hundred quid, and the shipping and customs I got caught for basically doubled the price, plus a bit more.
Mind you, I recently also ordered from Elite Rings, and they charged me 48 euro. Same problem, they insisted on using Parcelforce.
It bugs me when companies in the US insist on shipping this way when if I buy the same product from someone via a private sale on a forum or whatever, they will turn around and be able to ship it to you for about 15 dollars. Slower, but who cares!
That’s odd Ruairi, I didn’t think Elite Rings cost that much. I remember emailing Tyler Hass about it and he agreed to ship them to his UK distribution centre and having them ship it to me. It ended up taking about 4 weeks but it saved me a bundle on shipping.
I had a look at the box that the Elite Rings came in, and it’s marked as coming from the UK store. So there’s even less reason for them to use Parcelforce if you think about it… I’ve gotten heavier packages shipped here from the UK for under ten pounds sterling. 48 euro for a courier is a tad excessive.
I agree whole heartedly with Lisa and Eve, girls see eating/dieting as a competitive sport. I have had comments like – “ahh sure go on it wont do you any harm” to “your so boring” – in other words you are making me look bad, so stop.
When out for dinner and comments are made, I just say that they are eating what they want and I am eating what I want, end of story.
Since I have started the zone, I have had friends bring over chocolate cakes etc more than they ever did before. I simply send them home with it if they don’t eat it. My stubbornness has finally worked to my advantage
Clean & Jerk max 75kg, tec was, how would you say like a train crash for the last one.
On the topic of Rogue Fitness, I got the B&R bar from them – no hassle. Then ordered some fractional that turned into a nightmare and has now left me in an ethical quandary.
Ordered, dude confused my address, got bits right but sent them to the UAE or UK or something. Emailed and they agreed to reship. A package arrived but it only had half the plates, one of each not a useful half. Emailed them and they agreed to reship. They did, then shortly there after got the second package, then shortly there after got the third. So now I have 2.5 sets of fractional plates.
Moral of the story, they are American and poor at geography but ever so nice when this causes a problem. I have yet to get stung by customs but shipping was about $50 on the plates and about $100 on the bar. Pricey.
Shane
Shane, what prices and sizes were the fractional plates? I’ve been wondering about upgrading my bags of gravel with loops of string. Let me know if we can do a deal bossman.

Eve,
A+ for the 35Kg OHS great work
Lisa,
A+ for the will power
Paddy,
Irish mothers/mothers in law feed you just to make you less attractive to other women.
Sue,
B+ lose marks for being too polite in your treat refusal.
Bobby,
You are a clownbox
Pixie,
see above
Ed,
I like the fact you don’t give a balls what other people think, that’s progressive thinking there, you are wise beyond your years.
Marianne,
hmmm chocolate cake!!!!!!!!!!
Ste,
stop posting as Ste, you are to use your nickname of “fitness pro” or “special k”
Jeff,
Nice to have you back
With regards to the diet, take a leaf out of Ed’s book, don’t care what other people think. I find a response of “you’re not eating that s*%&e???” when offered a treat or cake in work normally has the desired effect and results in no future offers.
