  1. Bobby says:

Any word on what the Langerfest workouts will be? Or what the format of the day is even?

Oh and my Angie DOMS have hit and are mixed with Front Squat DOMS, my legs are fine surprisingly but my whole upper back and shoulder area is stiff and sore. I think I’ll skip the gymnastics for tonight.

  2. Eamonn says:

You gymnastics skipping mofo Bobby! I’m also skipping tonight.

I’m curious to know the workouts for Langerfest too though I’m guessing it won’t come out until week. I’m also guessing there’s some colloboration between Dublin & Cork to pick the workouts to make sure there’s no funny business.

Oh and articles saying Dairy is bad for you make me sad. Would be quite a bit of work and hard on the wallet for me to get enough food in without dairy.

  3. Ed says:

I ain’t sure about this “net acid load” business. How much green tea and vegetables are you gonna have to consume to stop your bones melting? So if ya look at a marathon runner that fuels up on tons of “acidifying” grains, presumably some “acidifying” meat and does a holy sh!t-ton of “acidifying” exercise, then how does he exist past 40 without turning into a molten heap of goo? What level of acid leaning behaviour will actually lead to a noticeable drop in bone density and cause gout? Are we talking a Ph difference of 0.1? 1? 3? over how long? Where does activity level fit into this?

Now weight-bearing stuff apparently increases bone-density too and if we assume the studies indicating this (we can’t say “proving” anymore!) were performed on people who have a fairly significant grain intake (ok, this assumption is based on a similar reasoning to assuming that most people have broken a law or two at some point in their lives) and are not in perfect acid balance (i.e are not coeliac vegans), then are in a position whereby bone density is, counter intuitively, increased while on an acid-leaning diet. So it looks like the system is more complicated than the current understanding of it and we are looking at what might happen as opposed to what is actually happening.

It looks like one of those things like calories in vs calories out which a while heap of feckers mistakenly apply the first law to a dynamic system and state that you can’t argue because “it’s the first law of thermodynamics stoopid!”. That’s like applying Newton’s laws to electrons…

Maybe I’ve softened my stance over the last while as at one point, over several months I was avoiding the following: milk, med-high GI fruit, nightshades, sat fat (Cordain’s fault!) coffee(!), alcohol, all grains and reintroducing most of them didn’t give me arthritis, gut-rot, obesity, heart disease etc. I could be less healthy now (or I might not be) but it’s better than being worried about red f*cking peppers and a few bloody bananas!

Needless to say I could be wrong. On everything.

  4. Ed says:

Hmmm, that looks like the first draft of a post…

  5. Will Walshe says:

The only pertinent line in that article as far as I’m concerned is “You may not even realize you have an issue with dairy until you give it up for a period, and then reintroduce it.”

If, on the other hand, you’ve cut the stuff out for a few months and nothing happens when you go back on it, fuck it, go nuts.

Same with any of the “allergenic” foods. I think it’s important to eliminate them at some point and see how you react to their re-introduction.

I shudder at the idea of how sick and miserable I’d be at the moment if I hadn’t figured out that large quantities of grains are no good for me (we’re talking being constatnly tired and getting knocked out by a bad cold at least once a month for most of my life versus my current run of nothing worse than a mild case of the sniffles in almost 3 years here)

But it’s a bit much to demand that people do things that have no measurable or observable positive impact on their lives.

  6. Bobby says:

I know Eamonn, I’m a bad influence on all the kids. I’ve had 3 good days on the trot though and I want to work out Saturday. I’ve hit some nice PRs this week so I’m happy to sit back tonight!

  7. Bobby says:

Crap. Meant to include this in my original post, you’d find it hard to get in 16 blocks in a day if it weren’t for milk? Pixie said similar things to me about how he finds 16 blocks to be a lot of food. I dunno, maybe I’m just hungrier than you guys or just have worse will power but 16 blocks is as low as I can go on an active day. Rest days like today and I could eat less but on a typical day I’d eat my 16 blocks no problem whatsoever.

  8. Eamonn says:

I was well on the way to proving Tony was wrong about girls prefering cuddly men to sixpacks when I finished SS and stopped drinking bucket loads of milk. I noticed however dropping milk made me weak so I went back drinking the delicious liquid. Proving Tony wrong will have to wait until I have a 2BW Deadlift. Then I’ll cut back on the stuff and get some ABZ brah.

In conclusion if you are trying to drop bodyfat don’t drink milk in my experience. If you are weak like kitten keep drinking the milk and worry about the abundance of cuddlyness later.

  9. Bobby says:

Fair enough about the milk, but do you eat enough meats and fish besides the milk? Just doing a quick count in my head I would eat between 500 – 700 grams of lean meat or fish on a daily basis. I don’t drink milk or use any dairy products day to day but am still getting stronger. I dunno. I did the whole GOMAD thing and got some man-legs but losing the milk and upping the meat hasn’t cost me them yet.

  10. Eamonn says:

I’m not doing Zone Bobby. I try to do as close to Palaeo + Diary as possible. As you know yourself though the reversation is firmly left behind on the weekends. I’ve not done zone before but I’m pretty sure I take in a ton more calories than I would if I were on zone. I still drink about 1.5L of milk a day to help cure me of my weakness.

  11. Eamonn says:

Hmm this posting in close proximity to each other is proving troublesome.

Typical protein intake a day for me at the moment is.

    5-6 eggs
    1.5L Milk
    Chicken Breast
    Steak/Chop

I’m guessing I could up the meat a bit more and drop the milk back a bit. Milk is a pretty conveniant though and I’m still a bit lazy when it comes to food.

  12. Bobby says:

Wow. Fair enough. I’m most definitely on a calorific restriction on the zone (I’ve lost a good deal of bodyfat since I started it, I don’t got ABZ yet brah but I’m getting there). One thing I found about zoning is that I take in a lot more protein than I would otherwise. Whatever about my carb intake, my protein has gone through the roof since I started on it.

  13. Dale says:

I did a 3 month no dairy products when i have really bad eczema and nothing was working i got tested in a health food shop they said i was allergic to dairy so i dropped them , Made no difference to me what so ever if anything my Ecema got worse so i’m back on dairy .

Having said that i don’t really eat a massive amount of dairy bar milk in my porridge and tea with cheese in a few things too , as for tony’s comment on 6pack vs cuddly men the jury out of that still but id have to argue that Tony is wrong on that one based on the women i know .

  14. Bobby says:

    Your face is proving troublesome.

Honestly looks like too little protein to me. I get where you’re coming from regards being lazy with food. I haven’t cooked a vegetable in 3 months. I’m inadvertantly living some form of raw-paleo diet because I don’t want the hassle of cleaning a pot up after I’ve steamed something.

  15. Colm says:

    Eamonn,

At a guess I’d say you could up your meat and keep your milk intake. The week seems to take a good deal out of you so putting sleep aside, I’d say foodage is the easiest way to increase your recovery capacity.

I’d be with Bobby on 16 blocks not being a lot of food.

  16. Bobby says:

    Foodage. Good word.

  17. Eamonn says:

Maybe I should talk to Tom and not have a silly thing like genetics (& laziness) stand in my way.

  18. Bobby says:

What you really need is powerisers and some heat shock proteins.

  19. Ruairi says:

I’m on 16 blocks, I think irrespective of whether it *feels* like too much food to be eating, if you are doing five WODs a week plus your normal everyday activities then I think its about the minimum you can get away with.

  21. Tony says:

Below is a snip from a crossfit journal called “silly bullshit” by Mark Rippetoe. It relates to the abz debate. It would be interesting to actually get the girls opinion on the subject as so far all we’ve had is the guy’s version of what they think the girls opinions are.

“And muscle magazines are at least partly to blame for an epidemic of SB concerning teenage boys and young men. A recent trend has developed amongst these little snots that makes it very difficult to put any muscular bodyweight on them: they all seem to think they have to have visible abs, even if it means staying at a bodyweight of 135 pounds. They all want a “six-pack” despite the fact that they don’t have an ice chest to put it in. They won’t eat breakfast, they eat some type of fast food goo for lunch, and if they eat supper it’s because Mom made them. This is intentional, and is their version of “dieting” to keep that trim, fit look.
Now don’t misunderstand my concern here: I know that we live in a society largely dominated by fat slobs. Maybe not where you live, but where I live this is true, and I suspect that the vast majority of the United States suffers this unintended result of our economic prosperity. So any drift in the opposite direction is cool, right? Look, when high school and college-age kids come to me and ask how to put on muscle and I take the time to tell them and then they won’t do it because they’re afraid they’ll lose their Washboard Abs, it pisses me off to waste my time with people who ask and then won’t listen to what I know will work for what they claim to be trying to do, and, well, it just gets aggravating, you know? And it’s all because they actually think that 1) if they have abs they’ll look like Ronnie Coleman and me, 2) chicks really dig a six-pack, and 3) what does Rip know anyway?
Well, Rip knows that a 135-pound, 5’ 9”, 18-year-old kid doesn’t look like either Ronnie or Rip, even if he has a twelve-pack, and that if he seriously wants to head in that direction the first thing to do is to gain about 60 pounds. Ole Rip also knows that women don’t really care about abs. They care about Other Things. And after all, you asked Rip; he didn’t ask you. So put down your Muscle and Fiction, do your squats, drink your milk, and pay better attention to the answers when you ask the questions”

  23. Will Walshe says:

    Jeebus Eamonn, are you serious?

Unless this is the largest damn chicken breast ever I’d bet the farm you’re well below Zone levels of protein (and the Zone is not a lot of protein).

There’s some weighing and measuring figuring in your future sir.

  24. Eamonn says:

Damn I should have kept my mouth shut. I’m off now to uneven the balance even further with the drinking of ale.

Good luck to Ruairi, Colm & Will tomorrow. All you bro’s.

  25. Colm says:

    Strict Pressin’:
    Arlene – 24Kg
    Marianne – 24Kg

    Benchin’:
    Stephen – 95Kg
    Tony – 85Kg
    Tom B – 90Kg

    Metcon:
    Eoin O’K – 4 rounds (Green band)

    Row 2K:
    Arlene – 9:23.0
    Tony – 7:12.4

  26. Ruairi says:

    “5-6 eggs
    1.5L Milk
    Chicken Breast
    Steak/Chop”

Looking at this, then 6 eggs = 6 protein blocks (nearly) … The chicken breast possibly 3 blocks … I count a steak at a block per oz … A litre of milk is something like 4-5 blocks of protein AFAIK.

So unless I’m figuring it wrong I don’t think he’s that low on protein blocks, no?

    Hi Guys,
Just heard some sad news, I believe Stuart Mangan passed away.
