  1. Cool video. Someone should have went all Christian Bale up on that guy in the funny shorts ruining the shot near the end though.

  2. On the Paleo Vs Zone link I’m a bit confused as well after reading it. Doesn’t Crossfit HQ recommend Quality and Quantity i.e. Paleo & Zone. Where is the breakdown happening?

  3. Anyone got any links to discussion / articles from HQ/the mainsite/ where else that Robb is referring to?

  4. Off All topics:

Does anyone have a small flash mp3 player they don’t want anymore or are looking to sell? I am looking for one to use while running, specifically to drone out the thoughts of wanting to stop on the other races I do this summer. I have a regular mp3 player already so I don’t want to spend too much.

  5. Thanks for the link Eamonn – I’ve read Tony Budding’s and Robb Wolf’s posts mainly.

Will, I was wrong on double fats – it’s triple fats for replacing carb blocks according to Robb.

Pixie, if you need to, up your fats.

    Good piece from Robb:
    Business-
We have grown more in the last year than we did in the previous 4 years combined. Why? because or program is fun, safe and GETS RESULTS above and beyond anything else in our area. Less than 5% of our folks, including the ones listed as top level athletes, use a WAM Zone. Why? I do not find it necessary for the vast majority of our folks. When and where it’s appropriate, I do it. Certain hours we literally have no where else to put people and we just moved into a 6,000 sqft facility last august. We will be at max capacity before the year is out. My point here is that we are doing SOMETHING right. I’m NOT saying we have it all figured out, but we worked both angles, first pushing hard for everyone to do a WAM Zone and our success was not what it is now with the focus on food quality (Paleo). I find it humorous when people who have NEVER run an affiliate, never grown it up from nothing, never bought a house, cars and planned retirement from the gym they have built, have some kind of strong FEELINGS about how best to run the nutrition program in a gym.

Other examples I can cite are the Paleo vs Zone competition up in Vancouver (Paleo won) and the switch from Zone to Paleo at Petranek Fitness after John Welbourn gave a Paleo talk there a few months ago. I also have the hundreds of trainers and affiliate owners who have attended my cert who report “Paleo appears to be easier to implement and gets our clients quicker, better results than when we were pushing the Zone primarily…” perhaps a CFJ piece on my email comments would be of value to clarify this issue.

Sorry for the Long scree, but I REALLY want to bring some clarity to this topic. Food quality matters, it matters varying amounts from person to person. it matters both with regards to athleticism and being successful in business. and you know what? It’s as simple as “Try it…see how it goes”. The funny thing is there are people who refuse to try it, yet still make bold sweeping statements on the topic.

This sounds eerily similar to when newbies show up on the comments section of the WOD and insist the programming can not work as claimed…without ever trying the programming. so, like I said, this is not religion, just something to try and see how it goes.

  6. Very, very interesting exchange between Robb and Tony.

I guess at the moment I am much closer to the Zone-with-surprisingly-poor-food-choices end of the spectrum. I’m *not* subsisting on a diet of Ben and Jerry’s and M&S burgers eaten according to Zone proportions (that was just the week before the invitational) … Of late in particular I’ve made an attempt to at least be better on the food choices for the carbs and fats, even if I still seem to end up getting alot of my protein from less than ideal cuts of meat.

My observation would be that I’m still seeing the benefits of Zone proportions and I guess Robb isn’t actually saying that less-than-optimum Zone eating is flat out bad, just that his guys have found it sub-optimum in comparison with a more paleo-biased approach.

Maybe it’s time for me to try for a more Paleo-based approach. The last time around I wasn’t getting enough fats and I had difficulty with figuring out how much I should be eating. The experience of having gone WAM (Weigh and measure, I take it) Zone should help with that.

  7. Anybody else get the feeling that Glassman has started posting under Tony Budding’s name? If not, the force is strong with this one.

  8. Stephen: 45kg, 57-36-36 (tuck sits)
    Pixie: 35kg, 60-37-47 (tuck sits)
    Eamonn: 35kg
    Sue: Snatch pulls @ 20kg, 1min tuck, 14s low L, 15s L
    Sarah: Snatch pulls @ 20kg, 1 min tuck, 14s low L, 7s low L
    Bobby: 35kg
    Ruairi 65kg
    Scott: 20kg

  9. You know, when I first glanced at Colm’s post I competely misread ‘tuck sits’ …

    I was like WTF?! does that say… Ahem…. anyway…

  10. Cheers for the update re: fats Colm, I was saying to Will today that I found my energy was somewhat low since starting back on half carbs but I’ ve been getting on ok, I’ll up the fat blocks again but holy shit that’s a lotta nuts I’m gonna be eating at every meal 36 cashews/almonds per sitting etc. Anywhere else I can get my fat blocks from??

Saying all that I find the Paleo/Zone WAM to be working ridiculously well, I’m on Day 8 of the second 40 day stint and I’m down another 4 pounds in the 8 days, it’s good stuff! :)

  11. Sip a little olive oil or throw a few flakes of coconut oil over your food if you want to cut down on the amount of chewing. Too many nuts can get harsh on the bowels too, so that’s another bullet to dodge.

Always, always, always measure poritons of oil btw, it’s stupidly easy to go overboard.

  12. Avocadoes are brilliant too, but I can’t find anywhere that sells good ones.

Something weird happened about a year ago, and now all the supermarkets around my way sell them when they’re far too hard to eat, with the idea being that they’ll ripen after you buy them. Any ones I get tend to start rotting long before they even think about becoming edible though, so whenever I’m dumb enough to buy another one I generally end up throwing it out and quietly bemoaning the amazing level of corruption that appears to have seized the once-proud avocado industry.

Come to think of it, the fact that there hasn’t been wide-spread public outrage at this nonsense leads me to suspect that no one else in this country actually eats avocadoes, and people are just buying them for the sake of making their fruit bowls look sophisticated and interesting. Bloody posers. They probably wear vibrams too.

  13. Will – M&S sell ones that they guarantee to be ripe. And guess what? it’s true. Prett damn smooth Avocadoes they are!!
