As someone who has soup most days (we have a great canteen in work and it’s homemade) or sometimes a very small plate of dinner, I can tell you that no matter what I eat at lunch I am still hungry at 4pm
Though I do actually feel fuller after the soup/broth.
Never really eat it. I’d read a similar theory a good while ago and found it interesting. Dont need to lose weight but I wouldnt mind ading something to the lunch time menu. Time to go soup hunting!
The last soup I had was fairly filling. I think it’s because there was an entire rabbit in it. I’m not sure this applies to all soups, however.
Alll this talk of soup. I have posted my favourite recipe in the diet logs. Love it!!
I won’t be down tonight, my hands are in ribbons so I’ll take my rest day today to let them heal up a bit for tomorrow.

There’s a show on BBC 1 right now called ’10 secrets of weight loss’ or something. Silly name, and probably silly science overall but worth watching. One of the things they did concerned soup.
They took two groups of squaddies (presumably the army volunteered them) and fed them both the same quantity of food at a particular time. One group got solid food and a glass of water, the other got that food but blended together as a soup. Then they did an ultrasound of both groups’s stomachs and showed that four hours later the group with the solid food appeared to have an emptier stomach than the group who had the soup. The argument was that the group who had the emptier stomach would be receiving signals to eat in their brain as a result …
First thing that sprung to mind was that Mark Sisson argues that weight control is *all about the insulin* (OK, maybe not all, but that it’s really important). Seems to me that doesn’t liquifying the food automatically ramp up the glycemic index, or am I off on that?
The other thing is that I guess there is an argument that if my stomach is sending me signals that it is hungry then rather than eating soup so that I don’t receive these signals perhaps I should exercise some mental discipline and man the hell up and ignore these signals.
When someone goes Paleo at first, or Zones at first, then there is a discipline issue around whether they stick with it … or how strictly they stick with it. It might take a few attempts, like giving up smoking does for some people, but who’s in charge here … us or our cravings?!
Tried that 10kg weighted pullup thing. managed 9 reps with a pronated grip. Only nine to go!
I cant believe how bad I felt tonight, really disapointed.Will be back Friday full of fuel this time so I hope lesson learned now.

Ruairi – I’d typed up a pretty similar rant but didn’t get around to hitting post. You’ve definitely gotta be the one who’s in charge of what goes into your mouth alright, the alternative would be a pretty poor state of affairs.
