Coach Glassman on 2009 CrossFit Games Format – video [wmv] [mov]

Following the video by Coach Glassman I thought I should start training some random FUNctional movements I haven’t attempted before..the result much falling on my ass.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEFLgEFJgrc&fmt=18
I wonder what he means by that. Is it gonna be something silly like inverted burpees and virtual shovelling or does he mean that he’ll have people throwing the javelin for time? This could be very interesting or very silly!
Excellent soundtrack there Eamonn!
Didn’t he say that even the movements won’t have shown up before (ruling out inverted burpees and shovelling) ?
Throwing in some form is probably a good bet, I’m predicting some carrying too.
We almost had a thread going about this on funckey, but a pair of repribates have turned it into a Men’s Health bashing session – http://www.funckey.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=1100&view=getnewpost
Ooh I like the javelin idea. Take some track events, add water based rowing, tree climbing, could be very interesting.
Or, it could turn out to be a disaster, with people giving out about bias. Only time will tell…
I can’t think of how he’s going to pick movements that people haven’t competed with before. I’m a bit confused by what he’s saying, does he mean that people won’t have seen these movements? Would it not be a bit hard (not to mention unsafe) to plow away at full pelt with an unfamiliar movement?
Hard- yes
Unsafe – Only if you’re not a crossfitter
Of course not, I forgot our spines are made of some form of steel
Most form faults are not dangerous, just inefficient, and it’s been proven that functional movements executed badly are safer than bodybuilding movements.
Speculation could go on and on, but we’ll just have to see, won’t we?
“it’s been proven that functional movements executed badly are safer than bodybuilding movements. ”
Really? Ah yeah we’ll just have to see what happens. On a side note, is it just me or did Coach seem very shook in that video, he seems to have aged a good bit since earlier videos
hmmm, I figure he lives in a cave on a mountain and had a harsh winter.
I think what they should do is get a bunch animals, release them and have a “field to plate anyhow” contest. If that doesn’t test the ten attributes I dunno what would. You could scale it too. Everett would have to hunt down a tiger and the actual human beings could chase rabbits/pheasants etc. Not sure how you’d score it though… weight of carcass? Come on folks, if we throw out every possibility then surely we’ll get it right at some point!
Right, I came close to fouling myself laughing at that. Bravo.
Oh, and Colm loses 5 scientist points for using the word “proven”. All we can do with the scientific method is disprove theories, they can’t ever be fully proven.
And I lose 5 semantics points for not noticing that. I’m losing my touch Will.
That puts me at -5 if I’m right, then.
The Jacksonville PD, the first people to be certified in CrossFit, had the data on their injury rate pre CF, and post CF. Glassman stated it was liked a train wreck seeing them do cleans and other such movements when he first observed them.
I think the War college lecture is free to download anyway, it’s in the Q&A, proven and all.
Andy Stumph has shared some of the injury rate data pre and post Crossfit implementation at BUDs (the training/selection camp for Navy Seals) too.
Pretty dramatic stuff. Beforehand: dozens of dropouts due to serious injuries. Afterwards: No injuries.
I think there’s a few ways to take what he’s saying on. On the one hand, workouts no-one has done before could simply be interpeted as new workouts in the same sense as new ‘hero’ workouts are new.
But then he specifies that no-one will have competed at these movements before … However, does that simply mean that the movements haven’t been part of the games before, and their component parts are not found in other competitive sports … Or does ‘unique shit’ indeed mean something actually novel. An exercise that is to this 2009 what the thruster was to whatever year someone first came up with one of those. I’m guessing its going to be somewhere in between.
If CrossFit HQ starts ordering lots of eggs and sppons or cages full of game then possibly someone will leak the information on the net.
As for the Jacksonville PD, yeah, what I took from that talk is that even though they had terrible form when they implemented CrossFit they were improving their athletic ability while still dropping the injury rate in comparison with the old programme. And this was with rounded backs etc.
Another thought – Coach said he wanted something like a reverse thruster, that you’d start pulling overhead and push down into a squat to us at the game.
As for tonight’s performances, holy sh!t I’m raising some monsters up in here.

Those push-ups numbers are outrageous. Well done guys! Nice work on the front squats too!
Me and John were chatting and while I happily admit that I did rest and arch and wiggle my arms and anything else that I thought would help me.
It would be interesting to see what the numbers are like when not allowed move out of the start position,
