  2. I’d rather workout with you guys than with the finest people in the world…….

So is it too late for my farewell email now that I’m already back in the states? Too bad, cause you’re all getting one anyway.

First of all I’d like to thank everyone for observing a moment of silence on the message board for me.

I can’t believe it’s been a year in Ireland and a year with Colm at Crossfit Ireland. It’s hard to put into perspective because in some ways the year has flown by and in some ways it seems so long since I’ve been in the States.

I still remember my first WOD at CFI. I remember driving up the road and not seeing another soul in sight except for some guy walking up in Oakley’s and Hawaiian shorts even though it was the middle of January. I figured he had Crossfit written all over him. As most of you know, I did the Kyle with Will and Phil and I remember thinking, man there are some fire-breathers here—my goal from here on out won’t be to win, just not to embarrass myself. Unfortunately I did, on more than one occasion.

I’ve seen some faces come and go but everyone that I’ve met there I’ve been glad to know and can say without hesitation that the best people I’ve met in Ireland (and the best friends I’ve made)—and in northern Ireland for that matter—have been through CFI. We joke a lot about the fact that CFI is wall to wall inside jokes which I take as clear evidence of the fact that we’re a sociable, close-knit group, and more importantly a collection of funny bastards.

For anyone reading this that is trying to CF on their own, I can’t emphasize enough how different it is doing it at an affiliate. I heard that idea posted a hundred times on the mainsite, but I can tell you that 1) no matter how hard you push yourself, you go harder when someone else is neck and neck with you, 2) even if you’re nowhere near anyone else a coach that never lets up on you keeps you working harder, 3) no matter how good you think your form is you’re wrong and you need someone else to be able to see that, and 4) the folks at CFI are a great bunch of people to get to know.

I did Crossfit on my own for almost a year before I moved to Ireland and can tell you proper coaching, competition (even for those that aren’t generally competitive) and camaraderie make an enormous difference.

After having spent years on the standard Muscle & Fitness weights and cardio routine in many, many different big box gyms I am truly amazed at the difference of CFI. I’ve worked out at the same gym for years and never said a word to anybody else there. Compare this to CFI where I count several of my friends and never met a person there that I didn’t like or wouldn’t enjoy spending time with outside of the gym. Colm is a great guy, a great coach and therefore CFI attracts great people.

I already miss everyone. By way of consolation Captain Steve is taking me to the firefighter’s training tower for a WOD this morning.

So I’m leaving Ireland a broader person? Perhaps. But a better person without a doubt.

And I’ll miss you most of all, scarecrow.

  3. Well hell, if no one else can stop crying long enough to say it: Kyle, it’s been an absolute pleasure.

When the inevitable US invasion happens Utah will of course be first on the list.
