I find I spend waaay to much time thinking about how wrecked I am rather than just getting on with it and working through it,

Too much thinking in the early part, then trying to say to myself two big breaths and go for it again

Great workout from everyone tonight. It's very taxing on the CNS to do thrusters and muscle-ups.

Don't have the scores at hand so will post tomorrow.

Bobby- My OHS is about 75% of my back squat for what that's worth.

The problem is that the limiting factor at the moment is my push jerk ... I could OHS more, but I can't get it up there. There's a video around of me losing the bar forward in the power cage.

Nice description of the WOD Kyle, the bit about quitting halfway through is exactly what I do every single time. I've come up with some crazy excuses in that period.

Something I was thinking about today, how much weight should one be lifting in their OHS compared with their Back Squat? I know there's probably no definitive figure but surely there's a rough percentage you'd be aiming for.

Bodyweight overhead is a good benchmark as is 1.5xBW on your back. 2xBW on your back is serious work, more so than bodyweight overhead? I'm close to, or WAS close to 1.5xBW on my back but I'm only at 0.5xBW overhead. I'm just curious as my goals for the year are intermediate standard lifts with bodyweight OHS, I'm wondering if I'm aiming too high in one area and too low in another?

Kyle - that was just a perfect description of a WOD for me, the constant questioning, always wondering if this will be the first WOD I give up on. Excellent stuff Kyle.

That WOD looks good, sorry to be missing tonight, things are a bit all over the place for me at the moment but should b a bit more settled in the next couple of days and I can get back to normal regular CrossFit attendance again.

Heh, good breakdown Kyle.

One thing that I always notice mid-WOD is the time compression.

Tabata rest periods seem to vanish into thin air. In the beginning I actually considered the possibility that Colm was skipping over bits of the rest periods for some reason.

And if its an AMRAP workout then I always get to a certain point and think ''Hmmm pretty wrecked but can't be long left now''. Then inevitably you find out that actually you haven't even reached the halfway point yet.

A variation of this time compression thing that I've noticed in submission wrestling is that if you're on top of your opponent and looking for a way to finish them then its like the clock speeds up. If you're on the bottom fending off a choke or joint lock then suddenly that minute stretches into hours.

Pretty common phenomenon in emergency situations too.

Ok, so regarding the article, first let me say, Awwwwwww!

Secondly, the author uses the phrase ‘begs the question’ incorrectly in the first paragraph. This is one of my greatest and most commonly encountered annoyances. The author has already lost me.

Finally on to the subject matter. I seem to go through the exact same process for every difficult WOD. I start out excited, usually energetic, sometimes nervous but looking forward to the exertion. I start off round one and think, man I can’t believe how winded I am after just the first round, I should pace myself a little. Yes, I am genuinely surprised even though this happens every single time.

By the end of round two I think, well that was stupid, I went out of the gates too fast and now I’m completely spent and it’s only round two; my time is going to suck. I have to remember not make this mistake next time.

By round three I think, this sucks, I feel awful. I really don’t think I’m going to be able to finish. Is this the first WOD I’m going to have to quit halfway through? Again, yes that question is asked, in all seriousness, every single time. Round three is tough. Round three brings many, many thoughts of quitting and several perfectly reasonable justifications for doing so. By the end of round three I make a deal with myself, go as slowly as you need to just don’t stop and we’ll discuss again during round four.

Round four involves me, still unsure if I will be able to complete the WOD, just putting my head down and trying to get through it. Times don’t matter anymore, thoughts of catching up to either Ruairi or Shane have left my head and I’m just focusing on the next three reps, the next corner of the building to pass, whatever. The same deal is struck, just make it through round four and we’ll revisit at round five.

By round five I’ve recovered somewhat and might be able to finish strong but at least I know I will make it to the end. This drama is repeated every single WOD. And I forget, every single time.
