  1. Hmmm. Nice link. Studies exist obviously, I don’t have access to anything more than their PubMed abstracts so I couldn’t really comment on their validity. Don’t take this as knocking the studies but I find it a little bit odd that when I contact Robb Wolf about good studies done using high-fat diets he couldn’t recommend me any. You can really search PubMed and find nearly anything to back up a reasonable sounding claim.

After giving the studies a brief looking over it seems like they all preach that increased protein trumps increased carbohydrate consumption when it comes to body composition and insulin/blood glucose responses. Not exactly proving Dr. Sear’s main argument about increasing unsaturated fat intake to cause fat loss. It proves another part of his Zone philosophy admittedly but he refers to studies that use the Zone Diet when in fact they don’t. Good scientist’s don’t do this typically, they will explain that the results are similar but not identical. I smell a rat already.

There’s been some knocking of peer-review on this forum and thats cool, thats what the scientific method is all about; unsolicited abuse. The problem is though is that peer-reviewed research is the only quantifiable method of proving something that we have. I fully agree with Rip that personal experience is as important, peer-reviewed research is simply the experience of a particular research group, except that every single detail of their experience is available for scrutiny.

What’s weird about the whole low-carb diet thing is that its obvious it works. I know if I lower my processed sugar intake and increase protein and veg I feel and perform better. Anybody who tries the Zone or just plain eats better finds this obvious too. How something so obvious has yet to be conclusively proven is what confuses me. The Zone works yet Dr. Sears has to quote obscure studies that semi-support his point. I realise I haven’t said much in this post except for elaborate on the question at hand but hey, I haven’t ranted in a while.

Oh and thanks for the video, 60kg overhead by March 19th, 2009.

  2. Whatever about the science, a bit of reading last night inspired me to get up at 6 this morning and make a breakfast. First time in years.
It was an attempt at 4 blocks. Zone-ish but at least its a start. Better than nothing at all.

  3. Fair play Pistol!

    Bobby, you took the bait.
“You can really search PubMed and find nearly anything to back up a reasonable sounding claim.”

Doesn’t this make asking for PubMed reviewed literature a waste of time then?

What’s interesting to me is how people (usually non scientists) will ask for proof of Zone/Paleo before trying it out whereas they won’t scrutinise their own diet to the same standards, when obviously it’s not working for them?

  4. And it seems we are back to my issue with the black box. Apparently studies are worthless, disregard them all. You are left to trial and error to see what works for you. Oh and by the way, if you’re wrong about diabetes, heart disease or cancer, your trial and error won’t tell you until it’s too late.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist at all. In fact quite the opposite, but I have to believe that the Atkins, Sears, and Ornish juggernauts all have enough money at this point to fund not just one but a series of studies to conclusively prove their hypotheses. And if they all pooled their money and agreed on the terms of the studies, there would be no way to argue any bias. So why hasn’t such a thing been done?

  5. “Doesn’t this make asking for PubMed reviewed literature a waste of time then?”

Not in the slightest. PubMed is simply an archive of nearly every piece of published research, whether good or bad. The latter part of that sentence is where the problem is, the research on there can be good OR bad. Thus you COULD search around and find a load of badly designed studies that support your claim. Only people with a knowledge of the subject area in detail would be able to see if it were reputable or not.

Not every journal is as good as The New England Journal of Medicine, there are some small publications out there which publish some awful, awful stuff. Its hard to explain, not all peer-reviewed research is good but all good research is peer-reviewed? If you can follow that?

  6. Yeah makes sense dude.

Have a feeling tonight shall be busy, meant to have two new guys trying CF out tonight as well at 8 so if you can, come to the 9 or secure your place at the 8 by posting here.

  7. Not going to make it tonight so thats one less…Goin to play football with loud John.

  8. Well if the Kyle is going to the 9 o’clock class then I’ll go to that one too, gotta soak up all the available Kyle time left, and it’ll free up a bit of space in the 8 o’clock.

  9. Right, should be full for both classes now, I think.

Shane 1.0 and Big Shane. You got in touch about the same time so if one of you can go back to 9 that’d be great. If not, we’ll figure something out.

  10. “Doesn’t this make asking for PubMed reviewed literature a waste of time then?”

    “Not in the slightest.”

But it seems like you are saying that asking for PubMed reviewed literature a waste of time for anyone other than someone with a knowledge of the subject area in detail. In which case Pubmed seems to only be useful for bolstering a particular bias.

  11. Well, I might do the WOD sometime after 7, because I’m bringing down heaters then anyway. Going to grapple with some Spartans too. Not in a gay way.

  12. Welcome to Brian and Robbie who had their first taste of CF today.

    Tom – 10,15,17.5(f),17.5,20; 13:58 40Kg/negatives (though he got 1 full one)
    Kyle, The – 20,30,32.5,35,37.5(f); 9:48 as rx’d
    Deirdre – 8:23 25Kg/Negatives

    Paul – 5,7.5,10; 18:57 as rx’d

  13. And boy was that one full one important to me,

I suck at powercleans, I will work on them when I go back to starting strength. Being a cock I ignored them the last time, CLEVER!!

  14. That was a horrendous WOD for me, I’m not sure the exact reason, could be the fact that I’m eating a lot less calories these days, DOMS from Saturday, or I just generally suck balls at power cleans.
