    Nice Work Kyle :-)

  2. Colm says:

What’s with all the comments lately? Have we run out of things to say to each other?

  3. Kyle says:

    Thanks Chet.

Ok so here is my attempt at sparking discussion. Borrowing from an idea at Rosstraining.com my question is, would you do crossfit if it made you ugly (or more accurately would you do crossfit if you did not get any benefit from it at all)?

The reason I ask is because I’ve recently realized that I would. At first I was drawn to CF because of the intensity of the workouts, the methodology behind them and their idea of fitness. However, in the last month or so there have been a few WODs that I have just really, really enjoyed doing.

There are plenty of WOD’s that I’m just wrecked for hours afterward, which is somewhat satisfying; there are some where my joints, tendons, whatever just hurt; or some where a bodypart just aches (thinking running and OHS’s effect on my lower back). I do them all because I believe there are significant gains to be had (and, of course I do enjoy them..once they’re done). But there are some WOD’s where afterward I just feel strong, or where I just nailed technique on an oly lift, or did something that I didn’t think I could do and I enjoy a sublime sense of accomplishment/satisfaction/whatever.

So much so that I would do these WOD’s just for their own sake. Take the 30 muscle ups from last night. I understand it’s not earth shattering and that Will, Colm, Jonny or 500 other CF’ers out there could completely smoke me in that WOD like a cheap cigar, but it was something that 1) I really wanted to do at some point and 2) I thought was still several months off so I was pleasantly surprised when I got through it. The same was true for my first single muscle up and will be the same for my first full range HSPU and then again for my first Diane as Rx’d.

So, enough with my ode to CF and back to the original question—if you received no benefits from the WODs, would you still do them? My answer is yes, although honestly I’d probably cherry pick and certainly wouldn’t do them as often….

  4. Kyle says:

Oh, c’mon Big Shane, how could you not take the bait? I believe the correct post was ‘Great work The Kyle! That’s huge!’

    What, too obvious?

  5. Pixie says:

I wanted to post that but was leaving the door open for Big Shane, I thought he would’ve snapped up the opprotunity sooner!

  6. Scott says:

    Yeah Kyle,

I would go to crossfit even it did not have any benefit other then the banter that goes on during the workout. Sometimes like last night, my form was poor and it was very frustrating, but I still enjoyed being there as we had a bit of a laugh as well.

Other times I leave the gym tired but knowing that I pushed myself and did better than my own expectations e.g. like last Saturday the wod was brutal but I got it done and when you think that when I first went to crossfit I was lifting 20 kg – 30 kg and now I can do a wod at 50 kg in the same time (even if there were no health benefits) it still feels good. Downside of crossfit is when you have missed it for a while and you come back and you’re not as fast on your runs the weights seem extra heavy and you don’t seem to have the same will to push on through the wod so you lighten the lifts to make up for it. That’s mental pain as well as physical. I do remember thinking I was never going to get a pull-up now I have done 17 in a row .

  7. Will Walshe says:

Hmmm, what if getting fitter, stronger and faster than you’ve ever been before in your life had no other benefits…

    You greedy bastards.

  8. Kyle says:

Maybe I should focus more on the benefits to my life of getting funnier and more drunk.

  9. Colm says:

Kyle, you couldn’t get any funnier.

  10. Colm O'K says:

eh, if there were no benefits to doing them then i wouldnt entertain the idea of doing them! Crossfit – Get really tired and sore and sweaty for nothing!!

For me anyway, the pleasure comes when that final rep is finished and i get up from my collapse, my heart rate returns to normal and then after a shower i think to myself “that was great, cant wait for the next one!”

  11. Colm says:

    Big Shane,

Sometimes I’m complimentary, so although I spotted the chance for yet another “Your Face” gag (and really, can we ever have too many “Your Face” jokes?) I figured I could just say something nice.

A little too out of character for me?

Colm O’K, I guess Kyle is asking – do you enjoy the process of CrossFit, as well as the benefits?

My answer: Yes, yes I do.

  12. Ed says:

Good stuff Kyle! The aliens are quaking in their boots as we speak.

Would I do this stuff without the benefits? does that mean that all my times would stay the same? maybe. Wouldn’t enjoy it half as much though. The very nature of this stuff means that if that were the case, nobody could ever improve physically by doing any exercise. Ever. Apart from curls.

I guess that’s kind of analagous to someone who plays soccer or bugry for just the sheer fun of it without caring about the fact that they will become as fit as a shrink-wrapped thong in the process. I’m starting to

  13. Ed says:

not care all that much about times and enjoy this lark for what it is, but if things start going south…

  14. Colm O'K says:

bang on ed. I play rugby for enjoyment, crossfit helps me enjoy it more because i can contribute for longer therefore i crossfit.

If i didnt play rugby would i crossfit (hey, if google can be a verb so can crossfit)? Truthfully, I would say probably not. But i do both, so it’s a moot point anyway.

Does anyone else crossfit for sport, or do you do it for health/vanity/masochistic reasons

  15. Colm O'K says:

to clarify my question at the end there, i mean do crossfit for the benefit of their sport (MMA, rugby, gaa etc), rather than crossfit as a sport in itself

  16. Will Walshe says:

I guess at this stage I’ve got to admit that one of the primary reasons I do this stuff (though there are a bunch) is just for the simple enjoyment of doing it.

As a guy who used to get sweaty and short of breath walking up a flight of stairs, it’s just plain fun to routinely subject yourself to feats of metabolic torment that once upon a time would have killed you. Instantly.

There comes a time in the life of every car where you have to find a stretch of straight road, put your foot down and find out exactly what it can do.

That’s kinda like what I’m up to.

  17. Pixie says:

Will I gotta tell ya, what you just wrote above is one of the best things I’ve ever read on the crossfit boards, I think it also is one of the best responses to Why Exercise? ever.

If men were still cool enough to wear hats , then I would tip my hat to you sir.

    Will = legend! :)

  18. Shane 1.0 says:

Right, I’m going to jump into this one. I’ve known a few athletes over the years, a few have competed at national or international level in their sports and one thing I’ve learned is that, whatever their initial reasons for getting into it, they stay with their chosen sport for the love of it. Simply put, they must be nuts about it in order to put in the time required to excel at it. This goes for any discipline, sport, career etc.

Speaking as someone who only does crossfit, as in, I don’t use it to improve on another sport, I would now stay with crossfit for the enjoyment rather than the benefits as its the enjoyment that keeps me coming back.

  19. Colm says:
