Will won’t let a silly thing like height keep him from correcting form

Carbs are Addictive – Michael Eades

Will provides most of the dietary/educational links for this site. What links would you like to see more of? Exercise? Diet? Comedy? Dare I say it – Current Events & Politics?

  1. Bobby O'Leary says:

If you could find somewhere that has a reasoned debate about the merits and faults of the CrossFit system I’d love to see that.

And by reasoned debate I mean somewhere where people are not just rehashing what Greg Glassman says but actually coming up with their own ideas.

  2. Colm says:

    Bobby,

For any debate like that, in fact any debate at all really, you need to define the aims and goals so you can discuss the merits and faults of CrossFit. With that said, I think it would be very difficult as a result. Can someone find a reasoned debate over the merits of the different styles of training in other sports – GAA, Rugby, MMA? Can someone find a reasoned debate over the merits of the Democrats/Republican policies? Oakleys versus Rayban :) ?

For what it’s worth, I’m of the opinion that CF is where MMA was 5-7 years ago, and facing the same arguments. Most of the arguments levied against CF unfortunately aren’t about it’s training method but about the people that do it, their attitudes and political/social leanings. The rest fall into misinterpretations of our claims and logical fallacies (though logical fallacies are rife in every argument)

All that said, what do you believe the drawbacks of CF are?

And anyone check out the affiliate blog today? You may not have heard, but Big Shane got a Muscle Up!

  3. Kyle says:

Great work Big Shane! That’s huge!

Went for a run this morning and man alive was it chilly. Felt sorry for those poor souls running in the marathon.

Colm, I like the stuff you normally post. I hadn’t really noticed a diet leaning but that’s probably because there is such a variety of information and so much contention out there on the topic. I’m always interested in Rips stuff or Everett’s thoughts on squatting, etc. But there is no way I’m arguing politics with the meatstick of the year…

On Dr. Eades’ blog. I had read that a week or so ago and at first thought it was unbelievable that folks with choose death over ‘sweets’ but then I realized there might be a lot of other unknown factors out there.

Oh and Bobby, not even with a thirty-nine and a half foot pole.

  4. Robbie says:

I know a lot of good information/links are posted here about diet. I have often tried to go back on older comments to retrieve such information, but sometimes have trouble finding what i want.

So maybe we could post all the good site links on Will Diet section.

  5. Pixie says:

What I think would be great is maybe a “Will’s Week of Wise Eating”, basically a very basic plan of what would be a good suggestion of what to eat for a week, I know that depending on blocks etc it would change person to person, but just to generally see what would be involved in a week of eating would be very helpful.

Other than that I always enjoy the links posted and always make sure to check them out.

  6. Ruairi says:

I think basically you’re talking about meal plans, Pixie? Because we all essentially know what Will thinks is the optimum diet (paleo-zone) and the incremental steps to get there (Will’s diet hierarchy).

Before I went zone this was something I wondered about. What’s a week of zone eating actually look like? I checked diet logs on the web, and a few CrossFit sites that put up zone meal ideas.

Like I discussed with Robbie a while back, some of the zone recipes in the various books are a bit … unappetising. I found it more useful just to look figure out block values of various meat / veg / fruit portions and start coming up with your own stuff.

  7. Ruairi says:

As regards what info should be up on the site in daily links: I’d lean towards articles, videos and whatnot from CrossFit coaches or affiliates primarily, then secondarily similar stuff from other sources, and then lastly stuff just for fun. The diet stuff is as interesting to me as the instructionals and stuff on technique, programming etc.

Personally I think debates about the pros cons, real or imagined, of CrossFit itself are probably best left elsewhere- there’s nothing to be gained here.

  8. Will Walshe says:

Btw Ruairi, just for the record, I’m not sure there is any Optimum Diet, just that the Paleo/Zone approach is really bloody good. It’s worked so well for so many different people that it’s just the logical first thing for a crossfitter to try. For all I know something else might be much better for a given individual, no way to find out if they don’t try it first though.

Tinkering and personal adjustment is only possible or useful once you’ve established some sort of baseline.

  9. Bobby O'Leary says:

Personally I feel CrossFit’s biggest drawback (for me at least) is its need to be scaled for the common individual and the lack of information regarding this. Pick an average guy off the street and he/she won’t be able to complete Fran in a reasonable time. By reasonable I mean something under 10 mins as Fran is meant to be a short metcon workout, not a slog.

I know BrandX provide a service in this respect but I feel the mainsite as a whole could provide a more thorough service in this regard if they want to appeal to the ordinary man. This applies across the board as there are loads of workouts which are purely too hard to do for ordinary people.

Secondly, the reliance on skill dependant movements for Metcon purposes. This is a real sticking point with me. I fully realise the importance of these movements and the GPP benefits they bring don’t get me wrong. I’m not too overly concerned with fatigue-induced form breakdowns as this occurs everywhere but moreso with how form problems can stop a person even attempting a workout. This really ties back into my scalability problem but how and ever.

Look at “Grace” for example, I can’t do that workout as its too heavy but I could attempt a 40kg version (remind me to do this at some stage). Many friends of mine could not attempt this workout at all as they have no experience doing cleans, similarly, I couldn’t do “Isabel” at the moment as I’ve never performed a snatch. (that last piece took me ages to write as to avoid various jokes about me having no experience with a snatch)

Maybe these problems aren’t too bad and its just me but they’re two points I rarely see debated. I know I haven’t put my points forward in an entirely coherent manner but I’m far better at debating in person. Oh and Ruairi, personally I think these debates are best suited to CrossFit websites. At least here everyone is in agreement with how good CrossFit is and understands the system so arguments can be laid out in a purely non-personal manner. Well thats what I think anyway.

More inspirational WOD videos are always good too, old people lifting stuff always inspires me to do some work.

  10. Will Walshe says:

Bobby – As far as I know, the mainsite don’t offer detailed scaling information mostly out of respect for the great work BrandX are already doing on that front.

But yeah, I’ll readily admit that even that system has it’s flaws. Scaling a workout is a completely personal thing, and is as much art as science.

The only real way to get a handle on what you’re personally capable of is to jump in, try something and see how it goes.

I started crossfit by doing a 40ish minute Fran, followed a day later by something else that was completely inappropriate. After a week or 2 of attempting workouts I got a feel for what I could and couldn’t do, and just played it by ear, trying as much as possible to keep the workouts relatively short and intense. Inside about 6 months I was doing the WODs as rx’d.

I probably could have made much faster and better progress with carefully structured, progressive scaling advised by people who knew what they were doing, but thankfully CF is robust enough that even if you’re doing it badly it’s still pretty beneficial (something about the magic being in the movements).

As regards the high-skill movements, if someone is following the WOD and something they can’t do comes up, I’d hope that would trigger a little voice in their head that says “I’d better learn how to do that”, and they’d then spend some time looking at the many excellent instructional vids at their disposal and getting some practise in that day.

I know a huge number of people look at the WOD for the first time every day and say “oh, I could never do that”, but if they click away immeadiately without taking a moment to look at a section marked Start Here, they probably weren’t too interested in the first place, and a self-taught internet programme probably wouldn’t be a good fit for their particular temperment anyway.

I’m not sure how much we can realistically do over the ‘net to save those guys.
