  1. Aye – looking pretty solid mate, nice one.

Those red 25kg bumpers look ma-hoose-ive! Got my Jordans delivery on Sat too :-)

  2. That looks pretty sleek. Looks like you bought yourself a few square metres there too.

  3. Once again action photography of Kyle…looking at the bar and patiently waiting for gravity to subside.

  4. Actually Kyle, you were squatting at the time. You squatting, Dale pulling, James pushing and Will shouting, I thought it was a good photo.

I took another a second or two previously while you were at the bottom but your face was covered, so I chose that one.

Of course, had I my own camera…

  5. did front squats instead – 3x5x65kg. working on form with all squat variations to try and curb the leaning over problem.

    Few minutes’ rest

    7 Rounds
    7 Deadlifts
    7 Hang Power Cleans
    7 Push Presses

    12.10 @ 40kg

There’s always an incentive to do the overhead stuff in one set with these complexes as the penalty for doing them broken is too great. Nasty stuff!

  6. Could someone tell me the cheapest place to buy a copy of Starting Strength 2nd edition?

  7. Robbie–I only know of one place, and that’s Rip’s publisher. You might try Amazon or ebay to see if anyone is selling a used copy.

So for anyone that’s interested there is a debate on the main site comments for July 12 about who is ‘fitter’ decathletes or CR’ers (reminiscent of our cyclist discussion). Interesting debate if you have the patience to wade through all of the other posts.

  8. Skill is the problem in designing the test. As someone stated on there you would have to design a fitness test involving movements that either all or none of the participants were well versed at.

To be honest, though I’m not sure if I agree with Glassman’s assessment (am I allowed to post that on an affiliate site?). He’s got a TON of experience with many, many different athletes from all walks of life and I have none. However, as stupid as this sounds given the previous statement, I just can’t believe that Jason would really win in a true hopper across a wide variety of time and modal domains.

It seems to me that the games had a definite strength bias. If you had a 1m swim, or 10k would he still win against a decathlete? Would that balance out against the strength activities or still be in Jason’s favor? Sadly we’ll never know.

By the way, I still stand by my statement on cyclists based on what I’ve seen on the Olympics. There are some scrawny buggers winning gold. Oh and did anyone catch the women’s marathon? It actually turned my stomach—they all looked like famine victims and in no way anywhere near healthy.

  9. still working on getting the bar lower onto my scapula, so rather than max rep it, worked up to 90kg doing 5 sets of 5 along the way.

    Did the other in 11.37.

Question: do clips have a standard given weight when adding scores, or are they ignored?

  10. Just the bar (20kg usually) and plates, AFAIK.

A couple of us did the WOD this morning, and I take it Colm will be throwing up the scores. I have been reflecting on my rather dismal performance on the back squat: Made it up to 115kg, which is 7.25kg off what I think was my previous PR. Regressing? Bad form? Maybe a combination of the two. I can’t exactly use my usual excuse of being on nights / just off nights because as Colm pointed out my night shifts finished two weeks ago, LOL.

In hindsight a big part of it was that I was slack on my form, time to get back to reading Starting Strenght before working out. In particular this time around I noticed that I wasn’t looking down, I was actually looking forward or even up, which is death for back squats.

The bear complex was grand- Actually this would make an excellent AMRAP 10, 15 or 20 minute workout. It’s light enough that you fly out of the starting blocks. Had it extended past the 7 round mark I would have had to start resting for sure.

  11. Squats
    Mike: 20–>40 (sets of 5)
    Ruairi: 110-115-115(f)-110-110(High)

Pancakes: 60-65-70-80(U)-85 (much better improvement on form)

Deirdre: 35-40-45-50-55(3) (sets of 5 apart from the 55. incidentally, Deirdre is still taking it lightly and the last time she did a 1RM in the back squat it was 45Kg)

    Scott: –>55 (sets of 5)

    Seven sevens
