Transitioning from the wall hanstand to freestanding – Gymnasticbodies.com

Is anyone interested in a gymnastis workshop on the weekend of August 22nd/23rd? A friend, Emmet (amazingemmet) on boards.ie proposes to do two 4-hour workshops

Day 1: Tumbling, handbalancing and conditioning/stretching.
Day 2: Tumbling, rings and conditioning/stretching.

My aims for the seminar would as you can understand there’s very little that can be perfected in such a short time but I’d aim to teach for a stand point of that I can give you exercises that can easily be incorporated into the crossfit model. Also I’d be teaching the students and I’d assume the instructors how to spot and ensure the students safety while learning the exercises.

What do you think?

  1. Yep sign me up for the workshop Colm, sounds good! You can put me down for both days if that’s alright.

  2. One observation I’d make aboutthe whole idea of ‘learning new sports’ is that the gym is already part of a successful MMA gym. Colm has produced MMA fighters with a solid record. Most recently, our own ‘Kittensoft’ Robbie. If you were going to look at learning a new sport / skill then I think anyone could do well to look to Robbie and Colm. MMA or Brazillian Jiu Jitsu is for everyone, not just the muscle-bound and tribal-tattooed.

  3. Handstand
    (stomach against wall)
    Shane F 50, 45, 26
    Kyle 43, 60, -
    Ruairi 60, 60 , ?
    Paul 60, 60, 43
    Scott 60, 40, 47
    Shane O 30, 30, 27
    Will, 30, 40, 60

    Cleans/DU
    Shane F – 12:55 (40, DU)
    Kyle 13:30 as rx’d
    Ruairi 6:47 (60,SU)
    Paul 13:36 (50,SU)
    Scott 7:33 (HPC,SU)
    Shane O 11:10
    Will 6:58 (60,SU)

  4. Shane,

Good idea about the other sports, never really considered GAA/Rugby etc but I’d be up for it if we could go along some Sat/Sun afternoon and play a game or do a practice session with someone.

So, next question – anyone got any contacts?

Rob (not Robbie) is fighting in Galway on Sept 20th in Tribal Warfare 3 in the black box theatre against Myles Price of Kilkenny. Myles is predominantly a stand up fighter so Rob will be looking to take him down and dominate through Ground N Pound.

Fair play, Shane, to stepping onto the mats for a go, it’s a taxing enough sport without having done a wod beforehand!

    Oh, and Tabata numbers:
    Shane O – 15, 15, 10, 11, 10, 10
    Shane F – 8, 5, 3, 3, 2, 1 (Pull Ups)
    Scott – 14, 8, 2, 1, 1, 1
    Paul – 13, 11, 13, 10, 10, 15
    Will – 24, 11, 9, 8, 7, 5 (first round was 30seconds)
    Kyle – 25, 20, 19, 15, 16, 14

With the exception of Shane F I’ve no idea what exercises you did for your Tabatas

  5. I did squats, and Paul and Kyle did them as well I think and Scott and Will did Press ups.

Good stuff outta you on the MMA Shane F, think a lot of people find the idea of it very daunting but once they actually give it a go they find it’s great fun. I’m looking forward to getting back to it myself once the ol fitness levels have improved a bit more and hopefully once I’ve kicked the smokes again *cough cough*, so hopefully September or November *fingers crossed*
