  1. Aw man, I can’t eat cashews either? I’d be curious what Cordain’s logic is for saying Palaeolithic folks could crack open a walnut but not a cashew.

On a side note with these hybrid workouts I’ve been finding myself recovering a lot faster. Usually after a tough metcon I’m completely wrecked for the rest of the night but now by the time I get home, I feel fine. I’m not sure yet how I feel about that.

  2. I’d tend to be suspicious of anything not cited or referenced and which is on the internet claiming it has the secret to long life. Also if agriculture made us unhealthy why did it pretty much kick the ass of the hunter/gatherer thing? Just my 2 cents

  3. Kyle,
I like Cashews so I’m not going to rule them out unless I’m at a 2:01 Fran and need to do everything to get to 1:59

I’m gonna throw out some of the longer workouts here and there as well. I think these will have the effect of
    a) testing our ‘Weights before Cardio’ system
    b) training the longer time domains without the catabolic effects of repeatedly long duraction efforts.

(Remember, if any of the HQ staff ask why we’re doing this, CF Manchester told us so! :) )

    Eoghan,
If I recall correctly it’s that humans were very good hunters, and essentially couldn’t sustain continued population growth in the fertile crescent (modern day mediterranean, middle east and Egypt)

With agriculture came the ability to settle for long periods of time. Which allowed more possessions, more weapons, etc, etc.

Check out Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs, & Steel

Google Video Link (part 1 of 3, 55 minutes)

Good book, though it’s a number of years since I read it, so I could be forgetting parts.

  4. Eoghan – for real? Post-agricultural diets allow populations to thrive at the expense of the individual. You can keep a very large number of people alive and breeding using a comparatively small area of land by growing wheat and feeding them bread.

Type the word “hyperinsulinemia” into google or pubmed along with any of:

    Hypercholseterolemia
    Hypertriglyceridemia
    Obesity
    Hypertension
    Immune disorders
    Thrombosis and platelet aggregation
    Cellular proliferation
    Diabetes
    Heart disease
    Mood dysfunction
    Brain dysfunction
    Arthritis
    Hyper inflammatory states
    Alzheimer’s disease
    Stroke
    Osteoporosis
    Metastasis
    Angiogenesis
    Cancer

if you’d like to read some research laying out why this is a bad idea for long-term health.

  5. Colm—I hope my comment didn’t come across as questioning the hybrid methodology. I meant it literally when I said I don’t know how I feel about it. One the one hand quicker recovery is the goal of many training techniques; on the other there is something psychologically satisfying about completing a workout that leaves you feeling wrecked (which of course is the trap leading to overtraining).

And to be sure I was dying after the sprints yesterday as much as any WOD I’ve done, I just noticed how I felt fine by the time I headed off to bed, which rarely happens.

In an unrelated note has anyone done the dreaded ‘set of 20’ that Dan John and others have referred to? I’m curious to give that sucker a try someday.

  6. What’s the set of 20 Kyle? Is it the 20 back squats with what you previously believed was you 10RM routine?

  7. Kyle-HOW DARE YOU QUESTION ME!?

I got what you meant, or at least I interpreted it to me you’re unsure if it’s a good or bad thing yet, which by extension would lead one to believe you are unsure if this manner of training is as productive or not.

My response was that the longer workouts, along with the ‘Girls’ should hopefully serve as a test of our methods and adaptation.

Anyways, you know I appreciate the feedback, and you know you my cracker.

  8. I was really only playing devils’s advocate with the hunter/farmer thing but I’ll stand by the other. And aren’t alot of those increasing in incidence because we’re living long enought to be affected by things like cancer whereas a century ago we’d have died of TB or something, rather then all of them being hyperinsulin. Anyway, 14 minutes for normal Fran.

  9. 17.something embarassingly enough on normal fran. How can you love and hate a girl so much at the same time?

Pull-ups the problem here, took about 7mins to do the first round of them.

On a technical note, any tips on how to rest the bar on your chest without nearly breaking either your wrist or fingers or both? Looking at myself (my thrusters rather than my bod ;) ) today i noticed i was gripping the bar and holding it out in front rather than resting it across my chest.

  10. Hey, am I allowed post here? I have a question to ask – I would have done so the other night but for some reason Colm gave me 100 lifts [dont know the name] to do while keeping my elbows up meaning the bar was choking me hence I was unable to speak.

Right so, re the Paleo stuff – reasoning behind the types of food we should eat is obvious but I don’t get this – back then when men :) were the hunters, we only ate once a day [if that]. Why then
are we told to eat these foods but 3 – 5 times a day? Honestly, this seems like a reasonable question in my head but I’m not sure its reading very well.
Another thing, is there any chance of anyone ever suggesting anything to have as a snack other than “a small handful of nuts/seeds” or “some tuna”

Also, Kyle you are hilarious-in a good way i mean

Ok, last thing what is the benefit of headstands?

    thanks

  11. Will–yes you got it on the 20 rep workout.

And yes, Ali G. is the answer to all questions.

Finally I take back everything I said in the first post. I feel like absolute crap tonight. I told Colm that Will’s bad fran has nothing on my bad wobly fran.

  12. Real nice work on the headstands, didn’t time but most people worked to full extension before toppling over.

Robbie managed to hold a ten to six position for a reasonable length, and Kyle and I worked on lowering our legs to 90 and back up

    Wobbly Fran
    Keith – 12:07 (10Kg, J)
    Kyle – 13:52 as rx’d
    Martin – 11:40 (10Kg, J)
    Robbie – 10:15 (20Kg, J/Reverse)

Big welcome back to Deirdre, who did 3 x 15 Push Presses (10Kg), 500m Row
    11:30

  13. Colm O’k: If you’re talking about the racked position then I reckon getting it to rest more comfortably depends on flexibility and how big your shoulders are. It should get more natural over time. When Lisa was doing her front squats she felt that it was pressing against her throat, but I think that’ll go away.

  14. Lisa, palaeolithic and mesolithic people were both hunter _and_ gatherers – probably gathering food (picking fruits, salad leaves, salad seeds, roots, shellfish, eggs etc) much more than hunting; people would probably have eaten as and when they got the chance.
