Insisting that the thigh, chest, and knee hit the ground on the push up changes it from an easy exercise to a challenging one!

Alright fellas, just said I’d check in and say hello. Attended my first Crossfit Newcastle session here. Let’s just say that it’s amazing how much backwards your fitness goes in a week of doing nothing! (And it’s alson depressing how easy it is to eat complete and utter shit for 24 hours, between plane food and airport food.)
Anyways, went to the Crossfit over here yesterday. The WOD consisted of pullups – starting with one per minute, then a minute rest, then two the next minute, three the one after that, and so on. I was (naturally) doing jumping pullups off a box – picture 5 other tanks of Australian’s, and me on the box with two housewives! Managed to get as far as 31, when my arms almost collapsed. (Seriously, tried putting an IV in an old lady this morning, the shake in my hands was ridiculous, shoulda seen the sheer terror on her face!)
So then they all moved onto some Tabada-style workouts, then a rope-pull from the ground, followed by some group stretching. Nice bunch of people, and the facility itself is massive.
I was at a conference that afternoon and the only group they had was some dodgy tofu (and I fuckin’ hate tofu, but there was no other food, so I ate it!) and I was feeling a bit queasy all day after that. Was definitely trying not to have my first Crossfit-hurl after the WOD, especially in front of all these people, and the instructor offered me a lift home. Fine, says I, and I swear, every speed bump we hit on the way home, I could feel the bile rising in the back of my throat. He was chatting away, and I was mumbling along, trying not to hurl in his car. (It was pretty funny in retrospect).
Next he started asking me about CF Ireland, and who the owner was – I told him Colm’s name, and in his best Alf-From-Home-&-Away-Accent, he was like “Aw ye? Fair dinkum’! ‘E’s the little-reded-’ranger, ye? Think I’ve seen him on the Crossfit website”. I had to ask for a tranlation for the middle bit, turns out he was describing Colm as the “little red-haired orangutang” – which I thought was pretty amusing, needless to say. Soon as I started laughing to, I started retching a bit – thankfully we were pulling up outside mine. As soon as his car had sped off, I managed to hurl (a lot) into my landlady’s bed of roses outside the gaff. (She was blaming drunks this morning).
So, Colm – you’re famous! (Kinda. And I don’t know about the red hair, but maybe it’s the camera talking.) Thought I’d post this story, coz thanks to the wonders of Facebook I can say happy birthday too…
Now, I’m off to milk some snakes for some venom, for a toxicology seminar. Chatye later!
Colm–La breithe sona duit! I think.
Hmmm, Looks like Colm and America have the same birthday. “By day he’s a beardy cheeky chappie hell bent on separating metal things from Earth, By night he’s a large country housing 300,000,000 humans, a large army, the largest national debt in the planet’s history and Hillary Clinton”. Your secret’s out fella. In fairness, we should’ve seen the similarities: Both of you live on Earth, Both of you are mostly Irish, both are subject to gravity but the former’s trying to eliminate this dependence while the latter is trying to eliminate the universe. Happy birthday fella!
I noted the same thing. So obviously Colm will be celebrating by watching the Oliver Stone and Tom Cruise movie, right?
happy birthday coach!
did the WOD in between 20 and 25 mins, didnt have my phone so i was going by the clock in the gym
happy birthday from the nordies
Interesting on the CF games–seems they’ve effectively banned the butterfly kip.
Paddy–great story and best of luck to you.
