would you guys wear oly shoes in the wods? or only for the oly lift specific ones with no metcon?
I was thinking about getting a pair a while ago but wasnt sure how practical theyd be.
Cheers.
Interesting stuff from Rip in that thread. I’ve definitley noted that if I get stuck coming up out of a back squat then I will change the angle of my back and ‘snake’ my way back upright. Interesting that he corrects this fault by fixing technique rather than necessarily dropping the weight down. Wonder how he fixes it- a que to use more hip-drive?
I guess lifting shoes would work pretty well for any WOD that didn’t involve running or jumping.
I think it’s about time I owned a pair myself. I got to play with the them very briefly over in Manchester and they’re an absolutely dream to overhead squat with.
Anybody have a copy of Good Calories, Bad Calories they’d care to share with me?
Colm–I’ve got it, although with a different title for some reason.
So I just received SS and PP this morning. I feel smarter just being in the same room as these books. Maybe the Kyle will be able to justify using his self-ascribed moniker after reading them both.
40-60-60-60-60-70-70. I was pretty happy with my form, given it’s the first time i’ve really done squats, and i didn’t kill my back like when i was trying the OHS a while back.
Yikes- It really was ‘black wednesday’ for Kyle and I. Legs felt knackered going into this workout, and the rep weights tell the story…
Indeed, it was a horrible day for 1RM Squats everywhere.
Kyle – 150,152.5(f),150(f),140(f),140(f),130(f)
Ruairi – 120(f),110,110(f),100,105,110(f)
Shane H – 60,70,80,85,90,100(f),100(f)
Shane’s failure on the 100 was agonisingly close. He really stuck it out to try and generate the hip drive out of it but alas, the tonne still eludes him.
Paul – 60,70,85,85,90,100(Ugly)
This was the most hideous squat we’ve ever seen. An S curve from left to right to left again made by his hips, and the bar changing from low bar to extremely high bar during the squat. Eeeek!
In other news Paddy and Shane O worked hard on their squat form and by the end of the class had very respectable looking low bar back squats.
Max set of 5 was 30Kg, though most of their development came at 25Kg.
(Laughing) Tabata work
Pull Ups
Kyle – 12-10-0-8-5-5
Ruairi – 11-6-0-0-3-0
It’s disputed just who started who laughing during that third set.
Push Ups
Shane H – 13-8-4-3-2-4
Paul – 17-12-10-6-7-7
Holy Moses, that’s a serious dose of bad gravity on the squats. I hate when you start failing reps and then can’t stop. Happens to me a lot on olympic lifts.
I think the only solution is doing a “reset”, i.e, go back to doing extremely light attempts (empty bar if necessary) and work back up in small increments.
Failed 1RM attempts are pretty hard on the mind and the body.
Will- I did 115×2 in the warm-ups, and then tried 120 for my first workset. My previous PR is 122.5, so maybe partially it was that I went heavy too early?
Sorry, 110×2 as a warm-up, actually.
That’s a bit on the hefty side for a warmup to an attempt at 120 alright.
I like to make my first attempt at these things roughly 10% lighter than my old PR, and do a triple about 10% below that again as my last warmup set.
I wouldn’t bother sitting down with a calulator, just ballpark stuff.
I don’t know what happened. Really the strangest workout I’ve ever had because there was just nothing there–for squats or pullups.
Now, let’s never speak of this day again.
