The quote is true, the Kyle lives it every day of his life…
Liam,
Strong work yesterday! In answer to your question, I’m the same height but easily have 25-30k on you, depending on what I had for lunch, so well done.
Thanks kyle,
Yep I must admit I was very curious as to what you weighed.. Still great work by yourself. I’ve gotta work on my grip particularly my right forearm as that 160kgs deadlift was all my right forearm could take my fingers literally peeled off the bar upon lockout at the top.. So my deadlift will definately be stagnent until my grip comes along! My biggest weakness has always been overhead pressing power!
I wish I had the ability to gain weight its simply impossible. I’ve tried everything, at the moment I’m consuming at least 3,500 calories a day and to no avail. I train hard but still. Got my thyroid checked ages ago and its fine guess I’m meant to be a skinny fucker the rest of me days.. It can get disheartening though when you see how easily others can gain muscle ah well!!!
How do you feel about squats and milk Liam?
Will,
Aint a huge fan of heavy back squats alot of stress on the body and given my hernia issues I dont go crazy heavy!! I like milk I have read articles where it suggests drinking copius amounts of the white stuff in order to aid weight gain.. Again it hasn’t worked for me!
I’m 100% ectomorphic the smallest type of man my metabolism is through the roof.. Im actually at my heaviest when I’m active because I have more muscle mass as a result.. I actually lose weight through inactive periods because of the atrophy.. I can eat what I want whenever and that wont change my ol fella is the same as are all my family a bunch of greyhounds!!!
I forgot about the hernia, I was going to suggest the classic heavy-squats-and-a-gallon-of-milk-per-day. I’d be genuinely impressed if someone failed to gain weight on that. The trick seems to be sticking to it: a gallon is an awful lot of milk (just ask Ed).
Is it back squats in general that you avoid, or just low rep stuff with them? If the hernia didn’t preclude you from doing 20 rep breathing squats then you’d be sorted.
Aye, I’ve been guzzling 4 litres (slightly more than a yank gallon) of freshly squeezed cow every day for the last 2.5 weeks along with my normal diet. It’s assisting with my ability to liberate heavier iron from the shackles of gravity alright. On-demand muscleups are becoming a thing of the past, however. If I were thrown into a pool I’d displace slightly more water than before. The aforementioned observations have lead me to the conclusion that milk and squats have made me heavier and stronger, just as his holiness, brother Rippetoe hath prophesied in the great book.
Ok, so after tonight the jury is in–gains in strenght and metcon since starting at CFI. I promise I’ll stop my moaning now.
Well, reduce it anyway.
Ahh Kyle don’t do that, then all my playful slagging will start to look mean. And I really don’t want to look mean.
Liam,
I find it slightly odd that you’d do a 1RM Squat and 1RM Deadlift and then shy away from work sets of Squats. If anything, at limit strength attempts (and they don’t get any more limit strength than 1RM) is where you’re most likely to hit injury territory.
It would always be possible to increase your squat work sets by manageable amounts that stay within your 5RM threshold (85-90 of a true 5RM)
You’re overhead pressing strength doesn’t seem that low tbh, I’d say according to the Strength Standards link on the lhs of the page they’d be intermediate to average. I’m 75Kg and my 1RM is 67.5, though I didn’t hit that on Sunday, only managing 62.5.
Curiosity about your deadlift: are you left handed by any chance?
Deirdre – 10 rounds (15Kg, jump to support)
Jeff – 7 rounds (20Kg, negatives)
Kyle – 10 rounds (40Kg, Push Ups) 8 rounds on debut
Ruairi – 8 rounds (40Kg, negatives)
Not sure how good the video will be, but I can guarantee the soundtrack will be off the hook!
I see I got 8 rounds last time as well, subbing push-ups for the rings. Thought I’d break that this time, but I guess even negative ring dips were more than a match for me.
Good metcon, though,’The Kyle’ is as satisfying as kicking someone in the leg.
Will/Colm,
I use to do extremely heavy squatting prior to my hernia I was up to 5reps with 160kgs.. But I have shyed away from that level because of my surgery. I still do relatively heavy sets just not extreme weight… I might try a gallon of milk alright but I know myself I’m fighting a losing battle!!! Yep Colm 1rep training does put colossal stress on your body but I was curious to see where I was at in relation to you guys!!! Yes my deadlift is very good for my frametype and yes I am 100% left handed I do everything with my left side!!! My shoulder pressing is good could be better though..
160×5 @70Kg is mightily impressive, nice work Dude!
We finally gonna meet on Sat?
Seconded. Hell, even 160×1 is serious squatting for a 70kg guy. What was your deadlift like back then?
Colm/Will,
Open day Saturday.. I actually have a dose at the mo again last open day I was also sick it seems I’m allergic to these Open day’s. I will see how I am Colm I would like to be able to train when over there as apposed to taking it easy if I cant make Saturday I will definately drop over shortly before the next Open day for a WOD. I’m raging I aint in form..
Will, Yes its good squatting alright they are the kinds of rewards you reap from those back alley gyms.. A friend of mine said “Strength is Perception” if you surround yourself with 60kg deadlifters someday you might aspire to deadlift 60kgs!! If you surround yourself with strongmen you will become one regardless of your frametype.. Look at guys in prison their stats are awesome!! Why atmosphere! Nutrition aint great… Tookie Williams / Monster Kody look those guys up on the net both leaders of the infamous “CRIPS” phenoms in terms of pure power!!
My 1rep all time best deadlift wasnt much better than my squat 175kgs again grip giving out!!
So are you suggesting that if I go to jail, it’ll be great for my 1rm deadlift? sweet! squats, milk and murder. Now where’s me shovel?
Ed,
Absolutely your dead amongst many other things!!! Always wanted to wear one of those illuminous boiler suits while pumping:):)!!!!!!!!!!!!! What frametype are you Ed I’m curious since your drinking buckets of milk. May I ask what weight and height you are and how much you have gained since starting this.. 4 litres of milk would that not just interfere with your diet in the sense that you would feel so full as a result? If it works great, but I maintain some people you just cannot fatten they are few and far between but my family are a bunch of those few and far between people:(:(
Yep, you’d feel extremely full. That’s the whole goal with a mass gain diet for a hardgainer. If you get hungry at any point, you’re doing it wrong.
The basics of eating for mass have been distilled to 3 steps by Greg Everett:
1. Eat everything that isn’t nailed down.
2. Eat the stuff that is nailed down.
3. Eat the nails.
I’m against most things Liam
Hmmm, I think I’m about 5’10″, I was 73kg and looked skinnyish/leanish before embarking on this. I have no idea what I weigh now as I haven’t been near a weighing scales since then. I’ve gained a bit of a spare tyre and from the milk but it’s nothing that a few weeks of metcon hell can’t deal with. Regarding gains on the lifts: I’m fairly untrained in that regard still so I can’t attribute gains to the milk alone but I have noticed some fairly rapid recovery times. The milk itself is fairly easy to dispose of as long as it’s dealt with over the course of the day. Not sure if that’s any help!
Good stuff, I just find when trying to gain weight if I dont see results fast I give up its so time consuming and damn expensive hoarding mounds of food and drink into you!! It must have its side effects in the long run I would imagine!! It must put alot of stress on your stomach in particular and other organs.. Anything to excess aint great but if you want results there will always be sacrifices I guess!!!
Will, as for eating nails does that include finger and toe nails:):):)Don’t fancy chewing on a four inch round wire nail somehow:):)
